Desinger Babies

I saw an essay called “Designer babies” yesterday. It brings up the idea of genetic engineering. According to Ann Hogue, the author, she thinks that the time for parents to “design” a baby is coming. It is no longer science fiction; in other words, parents can actually make babies that they want right this moment. However, Hogue mentions that there are still opponents having other opinions. The opponents fear this new technology will lead to a disastrous consequence: such as imbalance in the ratio of men to women. Moreover, they are afraid of turning the babies into products with genetic engineering. Hogue declares that transplanting genes is just the same as transplanting organs. It is also a way to help people live better. Hogue believes that genetic engineering can wipe out fatal genetically transmitted diseases; therefore, why can’t people use it? Hogue protests against the saying of sex imbalance; in fact, Hogue says that this phenomenon has long remained throughout history. Hogue thinks that such imbalance won’t do any harm to human beings; on the contrary, it will benefit the world for reducing overpopulation and decrease the number of unwanted children. Hogue makes a conclusion in this essay, believing that after some discussion and experiment, human beings will develop responsible practices for this technology. This genetic engineering will eliminate diseases, reduce overpopulation, and better conditions for women without producing look-alike supermodels with high IQs in next generation. I think this essay tells us that such technology is still a controversial issue for people. We couldn’t tell whether it is going to make human beings better or not really. Nevertheless, one thing is for sure: this new technology will certainly change the nature’s law.
